The Master in English Teaching in the 1st Cycle of Basic Education is a 3-semester professional postgraduate training course, enabling students who complete it to exercise the teaching profession in the recruitment group 120 - English, in public or private schools.
The course seeks to promote the construction of teaching professionality in contexts of the 1st Cycle of Basic Education, through the mobilization of a critical (hyper)pedagogy, in which the student, future teacher of English in the 1st Cycle of Basic Education, learns to: analyze and reflect on national and transnational policies and documents which guide educational practice; build and mobilize theoretical and practical knowledge about the teaching and learning process; create didactic-pedagogical paths which are based on a democratic perspective, within the scope of sustainable and global development of education and the promotion of linguistic and intercultural diversity.

Candidates applying for the Master's Degree must satisfy all of the following conditions: - higher academic qualifications stated in a) to c), no 1, article 17 of the Decree-Law 74/2006 24th March, updated by the Decree-Law no.107/2008 25th June, Decree-Law 230/2009 14th September and Decree-Law 115/2013 7th August; - higher academic qualifications equivalent to 80 to 100 ECTS credits in English; - oral and written proficiency in Portuguese and control of the basic rules of argumentative logic and criticism. Candidates with 75% of the ECTS credits established as minimum requisits may also apply to this study programme but the registration in the curricular units within Specific Didactis and initiation to professional practice, including supervised teaching practice or others defined by the organic unit's body, is dependent on the acquisition of the missing ECTS credits.
