The Masters in Specialized Translation and Interpreting (MTIE) from the Polytechnic Institute of Porto had its first edition in 2007/08, and since then, it has been developing with considerable success, reason why it obtained a 6-year accreditation from the national agency A3Es. Classes take place in technologically advanced laboratories, using the latest computer-assisted translation tools, namely automatic computer-tools, localization software and the interpreting that are most widely used in the Portuguese and in the international markets.
The curriculum taught in evening classes comprises four semesters. Its highest point is a Dissertation, a Project or a Professional Traineeship. The degree includes Interpreting (namely Remote, Liaison, Conference and Teleconference Interpreting), Translation, Localization, Subtitling, Translation Project Management, and Research Methodologies, which makes it a unique example in Portugal. The MTIE provides training in Intersemiotic, Legal and Economic translation with highly qualified teachers in English, German, French, Spanish and Russian. The MTIE students attend regularly masterclasses and conferences delivered by national and international guest speakers from the most relevant areas of the degree.
The MTIE Degree holders from ISCAP are ready for immediate integration in the labour market. They stand out with their ability to deal with specialized language from the various fields of knowledge and with the most recent translation tools. Career prospects include translation, interpreting, localization and translation project management, editing and proofreading, as well as linguistic consulting, teaching and further specialized related services. Both during their training and after graduating, Master students of Specialized Translation and Interpreting are qualified to join ISCAPs team of translators and interpreters, and experience an intense professional activity at private and public institutions all over the country. They are also eligible for internships and traineeships at ISCAPs various business partners.
The MTIE collaborates in translation/interpreting/subtitling projects of the whole IPP, and has traineeship protocols and professional cooperation with the Wall Street Institute, Portos Town Hall, Orfeu Publisher (Brussels), Open Your Business, Jaba Translations, Dokutech Translations, Portuguese Centre of Photography, COMBOS Research, Education, Consulting, SERPI Administration and Management Support, ANE National and Association of Women Entrepreneurs, Vida Económica Publishers SA, Associação Tempos Brilhantes, EDUCOACH - Education e Social Innovation. The MTIE was unanimously admitted into the National Council for Translation. The Directorate-General for Translation of the European Commission selected the MTIE for the program Visiting Translator Scheme 2016. The MTIE was the only project considered in Portugal by this competitive European program.
Graduates will also be able to continue studies at PhD level at Universidad de Vigo, Salamanca and Santiago de Compostela, due to protocols signed with these Spanish universities. The MTIE integrates bilateral co-operation and mobility protocols with partner institutions from France, Romania, Latvia, Poland, Netherlands, Spain, Macedonia, Germany, Russia, Mozambique, Brazil, the United States of America, Turkey, and Macao, among others. The MTIE is part of the Strategic Partnership Erasmus + with Legal Systems and Business Law in the EU: Translating and Interpreting in Diversity, and of the RESMI Network of Intercultural Mediation in Higher Education.
The MTIE Students benefit from all the resources and contacts from the Centre for Intercultural Studies (CEI) of ISCAP, a renowned research centre that cooperates with dozens of national and international universities. The CEI Prize CEI Professora Dalila Lopes is awarded annually to the student of the MTIE with the best final dissertation/project in the field of Intercultural Studies. Throughout the years, students who hold a Masters in Specialized Translation and Interpreting from ISCAP and who have shown remarkable work and research capacities have been invited to join the teaching staff or to become junior researchers at CEI, obtaining also scholarships to become researchers under the protocol between Porto Polytechnic Institute and the bank Santander-Totta.
