The School of Technology and Management (Escola Superior de Tecnologia e Gestão-ESTG), the only public higher education institution in the Tâmega e Sousa region, was visited by Manuel Heitor, Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education. Accompanying him was João Rocha, President of the Polytechnic of Porto, Dorabela Gamboa, President of ESTG, among other members of the School's management.
The nature of ESTG and its location, the existence of a void of public higher education in the Tâmega e Sousa region and the unmistakable presence of a business structure, of a complex and diversified nature, characterized by the existence of small / medium production units, of industrial dominance and monosectorial expression, were the issues most addressed during the visit.
Following the example presented, Manuel Heitor emphasized how the planning of the schools of the future is based precisely on "this increasingly critical triangulation between teaching, research and innovation". For the minister, there is almost a requirement for a break in the current planning of facilities in higher education, with the creation of collaborative spaces between students, society and industry being of utmost importance.
The necessary growth of the School was also underlined, mainly due to its capacity of inclusion in the territory, of adaptation and leadership. In this context, the minister was informed of the study for the permanent installations of ESTG, a project by the architect Rodrigo Patrício, which provides new spaces for administrative and management services, classrooms and teaching and research laboratories, as well as a library and new offices. , "a perfect opportunity to bring the industry to the school even more assertively", concluded the minister.
